Zayed National Museum:
A Cultural Beacon for the UAE
Opening in December 2025, the Zayed National Museum will become a defining landmark in the Saadiyat Cultural District, where it will join other cultural institutions and further establish the area as a center of knowledge and creativity. Designed by Foster + Partners, the museum blends modern sustainability practices with rich Emirati traditions, presenting a striking architectural presence inspired by the cultural and natural heritage of the UAE.
At the heart of its design are five towering steel structures shaped like falcon wings; a tribute to the UAE’s deep-rooted connection to falconry. These structures are not just symbolic; they serve as functional solar thermal chimneys that cool the museum naturally. Surrounding the main building, landscaped gardens offer a visual journey through the life and legacy of Sheikh Zayed, while the museum’s core exhibitions are housed within sculpted galleries shaped to reflect the UAE’s desert landscape. Visitors will explore six permanent galleries and a temporary exhibition area, each offering immersive storytelling on the nation’s environment, culture, and history.
Dedicated to the legacy of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the museum spans two levels and is designed to offer an engaging program of exhibitions, educational events, and research. Among its standout displays are rare objects from the UAE’s ancient settlements; a reconstruction of the Magan Boat; the historic Blue Quran manuscript; and the Abu Dhabi Pearl, one of the oldest natural pearls discovered.
This national museum is part of a wider cultural vision that connects heritage with contemporary life. Its galleries cover diverse themes including archaeology; environmental diversity; city growth; and traditional practices, aiming to connect local stories with broader global themes. Significant archaeological discoveries from the Palaeolithic period — such as ancient irrigation systems and early copper mining activities — are presented alongside modern research and outreach efforts. The museum places strong emphasis on inclusivity, with designated spaces and programs for young visitors; seniors; and People of Determination, ensuring that learning and cultural appreciation are accessible to all.
