Singapore has officially started construction on Terminal 5 at Changi Airport, setting the stage for one of the largest and most forward-looking airport expansions globally. The upcoming terminal is poised to accommodate 50 million passengers annually, combining modern automation, green architecture, and a strong focus on human-centric design. The project will be the focal point of the larger Changi East development, a 1,080-hectare hub that blends aviation, logistics, and urban life. The terminal is expected to open in the mid-2030s.

The design concept for the new terminal reflects Singapore’s unique fusion of urban modernity and lush nature. A distinctive feature of the building is its layered roof structure, composed of gently overlapping curved forms that allow abundant natural light to fill the interior. These “roof leaves” create a sense of openness and tranquility, enhancing the passenger experience while maintaining efficient movement throughout the space.

Unlike many traditional airport terminals, which emphasize speed and logistics, this new space aims to evoke warmth and a sense of place. The design strategy focuses on creating districts within the terminal that are welcoming, intuitive, and rich with greenery, setting a new benchmark for airport design that integrates cultural identity and sustainability.

The terminal’s layout and systems are engineered for adaptability and future-readiness. Automated and contactless technologies are embedded throughout the terminal, enabling seamless check-ins and facilitating quick, safe processing during both normal and high-alert periods. A new Automated People Mover (APM) system will provide quick transit between Terminal 5 and Terminal 2, enhancing connectivity and reducing walking distances for travelers.

Accessibility and integration with public transportation are also key priorities. The terminal will be served by a new Ground Transportation Centre connecting train, bus, and taxi networks. Planned extensions to major MRT lines will make it easier for travelers and employees to reach the terminal from various parts of the city.

Beyond aviation, the Changi East development will serve as a launchpad for business and lifestyle innovations. A new urban district is set to rise near the terminal, hosting commercial, recreational, and service facilities. Adjacent to it, the Changi East Industrial Zone will strengthen the city’s role in aircraft maintenance and air cargo operations, ensuring Singapore remains a key player in global logistics.
